pianiste Burt De Villiers comme p\u00e8re et le saxophoniste R\u00e9mi Bolduc comme amoureux, Chantal De Villiers sait o\u00f9 elle s\u2019en va. La compositrice affectionne particuli\u00e8rement le sax t\u00e9nor et m\u00e9lange le jazz \u00e0 des influences soul\/funk. D\u2019o\u00f9 son album\u00a0<em>Funky Princess<\/em>, o\u00f9 on croit aussi entendre les influences des grands saxophonistes comme Stan Getz et Dexter Gordon.<span id=\"more-3523\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>D\u00e8s\u00a0<em>Groovy Step<\/em>, on se lance dans des rythmes latins, qui reviendront d\u2019ailleurs r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement au fil de l\u2019opus (notamment sur\u00a0<em>Piggy\u2019s Dance<\/em>).\u00a0<em>Rythmic Song<\/em>, juste apr\u00e8s, s\u2019adoucit d\u00e9j\u00e0 un peu, pour offrir quelque chose de plus m\u00e9lodique et de plus senti.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0\u00a0<em>The Shadow of your Smile<\/em>\u00a0(de Johnny Mandel), on tombe dans la ballade jazz. Outre que l\u2019enregistrement semble mix\u00e9 un peu moins fort que les autres pi\u00e8ces, celle-ci laisse bien \u00e9merger l\u2019\u00e9motion lanc\u00e9e par le sax de Chantal de Villiers. La pi\u00e8ce-titre Funky Princess s\u2019ensuit, avec la premi\u00e8re\u00a0<em>groove<\/em>\u00a0soul assum\u00e9e de l\u2019opus. Pour l\u2019occasion, on nous ajoute d\u2019autres saxophones pour remettre du poids. C\u2019est tr\u00e8s r\u00e9ussi et le seul choix douteux de la composition est probablement de faire dire \u00abFunky Princess\u00bb (deux fois!) par le contrebassiste.<\/p>\n<p>Co-compos\u00e9 par Chantal de Villiers et R\u00e9mi Bolduc,\u00a0<em>1930<\/em>\u00a0se veut une belle \u0153uvre o\u00f9 les deux saxophones se r\u00e9pondent. C\u2019est doux, mais pas trop, et chaque note est \u00e0 sa place. La piste dure 7 minutes, mais elle s\u2019\u00e9coute toute seule. Si vous doutiez encore de l\u2019influence de Dexter Gordon, sa composition\u00a0<em>Panther<\/em>\u00a0a \u00e9t\u00e9 reprise par le band. En revanche, on offre ici une version beaucoup plus moderne, avec un son plus rond aussi.<\/p>\n<p>Les deux derni\u00e8res compositions de l\u2019opus sont tir\u00e9es du r\u00e9pertoire de papa De Villiers. Halo\u2019s Above vient faire concurrence \u00e0\u00a0<em>The Shadow of your Smile<\/em>\u00a0pour le titre de la ballade la plus efficace de l\u2019opus. Et le d\u00e9but de\u00a0<em>Smoky Moon<\/em>\u00a0rappellera automatiquement le th\u00e8me de la\u00a0<em>Pink Panther<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019album, lorsqu\u2019il est \u00e9cout\u00e9 en musique de fond, coule doucement et remplira pleinement son mandat. Les compositions et interpr\u00e9tations sont bien senties, offrant un bon m\u00e9lange de jazz, de funk et de latin; juste assez de tout pour ne pas nous saturer les oreilles. Lorsque l\u2019opus\u00a0<em>Funky Princess<\/em> est \u00e9cout\u00e9 avec des oreilles de jazzmen, il semble pourtant encore manquer quelque chose, peut-\u00eatre un ingr\u00e9dient qui fait la diff\u00e9rence entre un bon enregistrement et quelque chose qui passera \u00e0 l\u2019histoire pour son audace et son avant-gardisme. ~ <em>Critique de salon &#8211; par Olivier D\u00e9nomm\u00e9e
