Aujourd\u2019hui, nous allons tracer la diagonale (pas celle du fou) entre Chantal De Villiers, saxophoniste de son \u00e9tat, Tony Mastrull, compositeur et arrangeur, le Jazz Nonet, Chicago, Oliver Nelson, Eddie Harris, Gil Evans, Thad Jones et Dexter Gordon. Bref, tout un chacun aura not\u00e9 que le coefficient de difficult\u00e9 auquel nous faisons face est autrement plus \u00e9lev\u00e9 que les agr\u00e9gats financiers de la FED. Eau quai\u00a0?<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la premi\u00e8re nanoseconde de la pi\u00e8ce intitul\u00e9e<em>\u00a0Groovy Step<\/em>, compos\u00e9e par Chantal De Villiers, on a eu la berlue sans avoir fum\u00e9 de la moquette. Car on a eu l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre en pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019h\u00e9riti\u00e8re directe de l\u2019immense saxophoniste Eddie Harris, celui du\u00a0<em>Swiss Movement<\/em>, un chef-d\u2019oeuvre, et d\u2019<em>Excursions<\/em>, soit l\u2019album le plus \u00ab\u00a0pirat\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb par les rythmiciens du disco. Bref, \u00e0 la nanoseconde, on a compris que nous \u00e9tions en pr\u00e9sence d\u2019une musicienne bourr\u00e9e de talent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"fsk_splitbox_3702_onscreen\" class=\"fsk_splitbox_3702_onscreen\">\n<div id=\"fsk_splitbox_3702\" class=\" fsk_splitbox_3702\">\u00c0 la premi\u00e8re seconde de <em>Rythmic Song<\/em>, elle aussi \u00e9crite par De Villiers, on a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9bahi. Idem avec\u00a0<em>Piggy\u2019s Dance<\/em>, car notre souffleuse d\u00e9voilait son inclination pour les sons sculpt\u00e9s par Harris, Johnny Griffin et autres clochards c\u00e9lestes de l\u2019\u00e9cole de Chicago.\u00a0<em>Funky Princess,\u00a0<\/em>qui donne son titre \u00e0 cet album paru sur CDV Music, nous a s\u00e9duit.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Lorsqu\u2019elle a introduit\u00a0<em>The Shadow of Your Smile<\/em>, classique \u00e9crit par Johnny Mandel, avant d\u2019exposer le th\u00e8me de\u00a0<em>Panther<\/em>\u00a0de Dexter Gordon \u2014 yes\u00a0! \u2014, on s\u2019est dit la seule chose qu\u2019il fallait dire, Madame De Villiers est une femme de go\u00fbt. \u00c0 preuve\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 preuve, elle s\u2019est entour\u00e9e des batteurs Rich Irwin et Dave Laing, du contrebassiste Fraser Hollins, du pianiste Taurey Butler, de Burt De Villiers, son p\u00e8re, \u00e0 l\u2019orgue et au piano sur certains morceaux, et de R\u00e9mi Bolduc \u00e0 l\u2019alto sur une pi\u00e8ce, mais surtout signataire des arrangements. Ne reste plus qu\u2019\u00e0 dire bravo en s\u2019inclinant.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 peine les instrumentistes qui forment le Jazz Nonet avaient-ils expos\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res qualit\u00e9s musicales de Tony Mastrull qu\u2019on a eu, l\u00e0 encore, la berlue. Car illico, on a eu l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre en pr\u00e9sence de musiciens ayant la ma\u00eetrise parfaite des arrangements et compositions du Gil Evans de\u00a0<em>Out of The Cool\u00a0<\/em>et de l\u2019Oliver Nelson de\u00a0<em>Stolen Moments<\/em>. Bref, pour \u00eatre carr\u00e9, on est tomb\u00e9 en bas de notre chaise.<\/p>\n<p>Intitul\u00e9\u00a0<em>The Tony Mastrull Project<\/em>, du nom d\u2019un trompettiste et arrangeur originaire du New Jersey qui s\u2019\u00e9tait install\u00e9 \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, ce disque est tout simplement extraordinaire. Le programme, qui comprend des originaux et des pi\u00e8ces d\u2019anthologie comme\u00a0<em>All Blues\u00a0<\/em>ou\u00a0<em>A Child Is Born<\/em>, et le jeu des musiciens amen\u00e9s par le tromboniste Richard Gagnon \u2014 Roberto Murray et Al McLean aux saxos, Robert Ellis au trombone, Dominic L\u00e9veill\u00e9 et David Carbonneau aux trompettes, Jonathan Cayer au piano, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Grenier \u00e0 la contrebasse et Ugo Di Vito \u00e0 la batterie \u2014 ont fait de\u00a0<em>The Tony Mastrull Project<\/em>, une production de Louise L\u2019Heureux, un album\u2026 parfait !
