><h2>Critique<\/h2>\n<h2>Chantal De Villiers, la saxophoniste courageuse<\/h2>\n<p>Pour introduire le sujet du jour, on va emprunter \u00e0 notre cher ami La Palice\u00a0: le nouvel album de la saxophoniste et compositrice Chantal De Villiers est plus calme, plus doux que le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. C\u2019\u00e9tait forc\u00e9. En effet, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9 avec des pianistes formidables, et seulement des pianistes \u2014 le fin Fran\u00e7ois Bourassa, le classique Burt De Villiers et le \u00ab\u00a0petersonisant\u00a0\u00bb Taurey Butler \u2014, alors que le pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent le fut en quartet.<\/p>\n<p>Le titre de cet album, fait, on insiste, de duos, est\u00a0<em>\u00c0 travers le temps<\/em>. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 par l\u2019\u00e9tiquette que Chantal De Villiers a fond\u00e9e avec le saxophoniste R\u00e9mi Bolduc, soit les Productions Art and Soul. Le programme b\u00e2ti par notre artiste\u00a0? Il est \u00e0 l\u2019image des pianistes\u00a0: formidable, car il combine des standards bien choisis avec des pi\u00e8ces originales qui tiennent, c\u2019est tr\u00e8s s\u00e9rieux, la comparaison.<\/p>\n<p>Maintenant que la table est mise, il faut touiller le plat. Mais encore\u00a0? Qui dit duos piano-saxophone dit\u00a0<em>illico<\/em>\u00a0Art Pepper avec George Cables, Houston Person avec Bill Charlap, Ran Blake avec Ricky Ford, Lee Konitz avec Harold Danko, et d\u2019autres qu\u2019on oublie mais surtout pas le suivant, qui n\u2019est rien de moins que le disque \u00e9talon (comme dans \u00e9talon d\u2019or) du genre\u00a0: Stan Getz avec Kenny Barron. Ces souffleurs ont eu le courage ou la folie, c\u2019est au choix, de faire ce qu\u2019il y a de plus difficile\u00a0: d\u00e9cliner<em>\u00a0Dear Old Stockholm<\/em>\u00a0et d\u2019autres morceaux de choix (bis) en campant au bord du pr\u00e9cipice. Et pas celui du Cotentin mais bien celui du Niagara.<\/p>\n<p>Chantal De Villiers a aussi eu ce courage. Non seulement \u00e7a\u2026 En fait, il faut bien comprendre \u2014 oui, on le sait, le ton est un peu imp\u00e9ratif, mais il faut ce qu\u2019il faut, comme disait Queneau \u2014 qu\u2019en optant pour le duo, Villiers devait composer avec un coefficient de difficult\u00e9 tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9, car elle savait pertinemment que son dernier parcours serait compar\u00e9 \u00e0 celui respectif des gentlemen susnomm\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Cela pos\u00e9, disons les choses telles qu\u2019on les a entendues\u00a0: on s\u2019est r\u00e9gal\u00e9 de bout en bout. \u00c0 la fin, on \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s admiratif de tout ce qu\u2019elle venait de nous servir. Ce qu\u2019on avait not\u00e9 lors de son disque ant\u00e9rieur se confirme\u00a0: cette femme est bourr\u00e9e de talent. Mieux, elle devrait servir d\u2019exemple car, \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence de beaucoup de saxophonistes form\u00e9s dans les c\u00e9geps ou les universit\u00e9s, Chantal De Villiers a un son\u00a0! \u00c0 elle et \u00e0 personne d\u2019autre.<\/p>\n<p>Il y a dans cet album un je-ne-sais-quoi qui nous a rappel\u00e9 Richie Kamuca, Benny Golson ou encore Harold Land. Quelque chose de doux avec ici et l\u00e0 les asp\u00e9rit\u00e9s sonores qu\u2019il faut pour \u00e9viter le pi\u00e8ge de la pr\u00e9ciosit\u00e9. \u00c0 cet \u00e9tat des r\u00e9alit\u00e9s qui distinguent\u00a0<em>\u00c0 travers le temps<\/em>, ses compagnons ne sont \u00e9videmment pas \u00e9trangers.<\/p>\n<p>Chacun accompagn\u00e9 Chantal De Villiers sur trois pi\u00e8ces.
